"great job" doesn't actually quite describe it. You had to be there to feel it. We now believe we can paddle to victory - we even saw this mental thoughness at work against the Americans and the Canadians.

That was the most awesome Bedok weekend of my (short) paddling history. Thanks team!

diehard wrote on 24.11.2008 at 11:24:

i can understand the disappointment...everyone is disappointed...the contest season is over...we have time to think and reflect until january next year...but if there was an immediate lesson learned from it it's a test of committment to the team...just because we didn't reach our goal like being in the final and winning it actually, or one was replace by someone(for so many reasons), or the not so clear organization of seat allotment or assignement, etc...for me these are not enough reasons to quit...i think these are the reasons why i'm sticking to the team to help rectify these shortmcomings... and i also think if some members or people who like to quit i think we have no right to hold them back...we voluntarily join the team then to those who will voluntarily leave the team we should also accord them that right, privilege (i don't know what word to use)...there are always room for improvement...i think we can do this...paddles up!!!

Dirk wrote on 24.11.2008 at 4:58:

Berry wrote on 24.11.2008 at 2:24:

to all of you who did not make it to Paulaner last night - we who went, knocked down a lot of beers and we drank to:

- all of you who are disappointed. the disappointment is understandable and ok. but don't be discouraged or tempted to quit. there is lessons to be learned, changes and improvements to be made but the best is yet to come if you stick around and keep it up!

- all of you who joined the team more recently. ok, so no medals this time round, but you "newbies" made and make the team stronger with your dedication, determination and spirit. the team needs everyone of you.

- all of the team organizers. most team members easily take those things for granted but there goes a ton of effort, time, endurance, patience, nerves into getting events set up and going. you deserve a big thank you!

- the guys. you are an awesome force to reckon with. all other expat teams know that and you have their respect, medals or not. keep it up!

- the girls. what a bunch of determined, tough and fighting ladies! well done and hats off to everyone of you.

- the supporters (and i enjoy being one of them!). so we don't sit in the boat doing the hard work, but the cheers, the lending a hand here and there, the word of consolation or encouragement when needed also come in handy. aren't we the lucky ones, joining in all the fun too.

we drank to all of you, hence the hangover today.

cheers and with a sore throat one more "German Dragons, German Dragons, Black-Red-Gold"!

German Dragons German Dragons Go Go Go!
We are a team we are friends we are winners
So let's paddle hard, let's paddle deep and SIEG!

Sieg means win or victory.

Team: ROCK!
1/2: READY TO ROLL!
Team: ROLL!
ALL: READY TO ROCK AND ROLL!!!

Vera wrote on 20.11.2008 at 3:21:

oh I just found one on the net for a 'German' Dragonboat team.

Drachen AHOI! Wir bleiben uns treu!

will add a 'German' touch to it, though noone will understand it!

'Drachen' is the German word for dragon.
'Ahoi' is an excalmation used to address boats/ships. It's a German baotsman's term.
'Wir bleiben uns treu' means we will stay true to ourselves.

Vera wrote on 20.11.2008 at 3:11:

Hi Drachenbootfreunde,

Schaut doch einfach mal rein, einfach ohne www eingeben: drachenbootsport.funpic.de

Ich freue mich auch sehr über einen motivierenden Gästebuch-Eintrag von Euch ;o))

Na, dann, bis bald?

Ganz liebe Grüße an das ganze Team,
Euer neuer Fan Steve Mai

Oh yeah and the sight of us turning our boat (mens open- I had a great race) haa haa..., sitting by the pontoon relaxing and then having some cute chicks wolf whistle and then blew flying kisses off the pier to us could not have made the moment sweeter, too bad Austchams the chicks dig us more!!! Hi!

Warm greetings from the creative team at BDA (Bruce Dunlop & Associates)! BDA is a global creative agency that provides a range of promotion and design services to broadcasters and advertisers worldwide.

We have been awarded to produce the 2008 Beijing Olympics opening sequence that will be broadcast worldwide, and we would like to request the support of the German Dragons Singapore to help us find international talents to be featured in the opening sequence.

We are seeking to cast non-Chinese sportsmen whom takes part in the following sports:
- Athletics (Running/Sprinting)
- Triathlon (male)
- Swimming (male)

We are especially looking for swimmer as the talents cast so far has been too lean and small-built for the Olympic Board. Thus, we would really need bigger-built and muscled swimmers (we have been told to find someone like Michael Phelps)...

The shoot is expected to take place in late Feb, and we would need to first obtain pictures and contact details for anyone interested.

Your assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you very much!!

Yours sincerely,

i find it an advantage that the blade of the heavier wooden paddle does not twist so easily when in the water. however the constant pulling out of the water, lifting up and bringing forward before dipping it in again is much lighter and seems to consume much less strength with the carbon/fibre paddles.
a bit similar to tennis - i learned that with an old wooden dunlop and later appreciated a carbon/fibre racket for it's lighter weight.
i agree though, if the technique is not ok, then you paddle wrong or badly, no matter what.

Vera wrote on 26.09.2007 at 9:47:

So glad I drum and organize parties... no big need for physics there

Mark L wrote on 26.09.2007 at 7:46:

It is technique which matters more (:

Carbon/Light paddle = Heavy Pull/Catch
Wooden Paddle = Moderate Pull/Catch.

Efficiency of Stroke = Speed of the paddle drive in water

Because the energy transfer from paddler to paddle to water is in the drive.

The paddle acts as a medium between paddler and water. The paddler executes the drive.

Dragonboating is in relation to physics! Hope that helped (((:

Vera wrote on 26.09.2007 at 4:54:

It is amazing that the Mynamar National team were letting everyone eat water in the Penang race. They were using paddles that were even older than the \'wooden planks\' with the yellow end, which we used to paddle with...
So I guess in the end it is all about the technique!

Phil 203 wrote on 26.09.2007 at 4:29:

Hi Berry, Bernie,

the carbon paddles sure look good but I seem to be a bit old fashioned. Therefore I prefer the wooden planks as their weight feels a bit more comfortable. Anyway we looked good on the TV-shot, that I can assure!

hey guys,

you got some really awesome looking new paddles just around end of june but too late to use them in the june race. sava must have been the first actual race where you could paddle with them.

how is the feedback and experience that you got with the new paddles through training and at the sava race? any difference? generally better than the old ones?

i used to paddle with the old, in comparison rather heavy wooden planks and am just interested to learn if the much lighter carbon/fibre or what they are made of are being well received by paddlers.

cheers,

They have taken action on that before (example: blogger insulting malays) and you are dangerously close to crossing the line.

In fact, in my personal view you have crossed that line already and I would not be surprised, if you were found out pretty soon, making some rather pitiful headlines when being taken to court.

To all that responded,

The issue brought up since our first entry was about the establishment of foreign CULTURAL values in Singapore and the CONTRADICTION of the Singapore value of culture as a result of the former. We do not wished to be swayed away from this point.

There is enough material from the activities of this organisation to suggest that the influence of a socio-political end is not far-fetched.

We are not the Singapore Govt nor are we responsible for the actions of the Singapore Govt. We are the people of Singapore and we respresent the people's perspective. As Singaporean,it is within our diminished right to shape the societal mould of this country.

Germans, you are economic immigrants in this country. You are settled here because of the failed economic policies in your country. It is your country's responsiblity to provide you with the lifestyle you enjoy here. Understand your role as economic immigrants and promote your Euro-centric colonial mindset elsewhere.

We do not even have to respond to other foreigners whom are from third world countries. Singapore is clearly not a place for foriegn idealogies, let alone third world.

We also do not wish to engage ourselves with Singaporeans of white-monger nature. These people contribute to the contradiction of the Singapore culture while being oblivious to the backlash from the white society in other countries.

The prevailing argument is that till now, our initial comments have not been addressed:

1. using organizational means to promote German traditions, way of life, culture.

2. engaging in the active recruitment of Singaporeans for the purposes of a German influence in Singapore society.

3. the logo on this website which slanders the Singapore name by being designed in the backdrop of the colors of a German flag.

4. continued persecution of non ethnic Germans in Germany. The lack of initiative from ethnic Germans makes the latter guilty by association.

We still hope the German Dragons would re-organise to fit the means of a sports entity alone.

- when there is a group of chinese in america there is a china town(probably the only place you will find some decent food in US). Similary the more expatriates, there is going to be some spread of influence in the place.
- maybe JUST maybe do you think the government is acting along with all these expats to bring upon singapore a CULTURAL devastation????

Dear...uhm, well how do i address you? "Singapore for Singaporeans" may well be a slogan of your choice, but as a name for a party that openly posts their opinion on a website, this sounds rather obscure.
That is like me calling myself "Outside of Singapore we are foreigners too" or something. Moving on...

Just to clarify and to spread the credits more fairly:
we also enjoy fabulous champagnes and wines from France, despite any injustices or terrible acts, King Louis or Napoleon may have sanctioned in their days.
We also enjoy the wonders of Japanese technology, despite what those guys did in the past, be that Pearl Harbour or their past deeds in and to Singapore.
We also enjoy Australian dairy products despite their Mrs. Hansen.
We (at least many of us) also enjoy Coca Cola, MacDonalds, Burger King, Hip Hop and what have you, independent from our probably varying views on say the Vietnam war or Iraq, etc.
We enjoy the endless number of scientific achievements out of ancient China, or the oil supplies from Middle East countries, or the rich variety of music, dance, literature, movies and all other art forms from all over the world.

So where do we move to?

Thank heavens we do not have to worry about that at all. As long as we Singaporeans (and most of us do)see that the rich variety of cultural values here stems from us Singaporeans not only tolerating but welcoming them onto our shores, we can enjoy them right here.

As long as we don't get ideas such as building a fence around our lovely island, be that in our minds or hearts or even physically, we shall continue to be able to enjoy and benefit from the choices we get this way. That wealth of choices, that wealth of different cultural values makes us, what we are proud of - a global city in a global world. So attractive to other cultures that they come here to invest, to contribute, to share, to participate, to spend, to explore. And if and when they travel elsewhere or back home, they happily spread the gospel about our beloved island.

I think that is splendid and the way it should be.

Majulah Singapura

P.S. don't you think, this kind of discussion belongs to some other forum, rather than the guestbook of the German Dragons website? I am starting to feel that i am not respectfully behaving like a guest (!) on this website.

Since we are no \\\"Germans Only Club\\\" we help to bring ppl together to get to know each other\\\'s culture and learn from each other.

U r also right regarding the Neo Nazis. Unfortunately u will find them in Germany...as in every other state in the world. Being a Nazi has nothing to do with being a German, its about the way of thinking...which brings me back to my first sentence!
And u are also right that a Nazi might just punch u out. But the most dangerous Nazis are the ones who use the more civilized way of communication, they act in the background, using for example the internet... .

If u should make up ur mind and willing to give up the internet as ur camouflage u r welcome to meet us and will probably have a great talk about differences.
That talk should unify us cause we are all different!
But pls, a discussion about whether u want \\\"Singapore For Singaporeans\\\" will never take place, cause no-one needs a backslide in thinking of 60 years!!

Not a hundred percent but most likely. And I am confident that if I am quite accurate that he is going to reply back saying I am way off with my analysis. Then we know I'm right. But after reading this he probably won't say anything. Like reverse reverse reverse mind game.. Yeah whatever.

From my analysis.. Naming himself Sang Nila Utama tells me he is a dragon boater from a local dragon boat team. probably a team situated near you guys during your races. He is Malay most probably cause he associated with the name Sang Nila Utama and like everyone else, he doesn't realise that Sang Nila Utama is actually an Indian Prince from a southern Indian Empire. I say age range between 21 to 25.. I doubt he is older than that. from his language and historical knowledge, i say he is from a local tertiary institute or university. Cause the information we get from our history classes are flawed anyway. He is academically educated and thinks he is knowledgable.. likes to brag that he is smart and informed. Always willing to tell ppl about what he knows even though highly possible he is wrong. Wants to be rebelious but afraid of consequences. Typical poser. Wants change but doesn't do anything about it and in the end conforms. Bored, single and a wanker.

I'm local and proud to be one but happy that the world is getting smaller through racial intergration. Culture, society, religion and politics divides the world too much. Singapore has taught us tolerance.. I think its time we learn appreciation and respect. An open mind is harder to achieve than we think it is. So let us all try harder. But please stop giving each other flawed history lessons here. Its too painful when the facts are wrong. Guys. Read from a few sources before you dispense information.

Just wanted to put my intelligence to good use. Have a good day people. Why fight when we can make love. Sounds like more fun anyway.

Dear Singapore For Singaporeans,

I totally agree with you.

Singapura (or Temasek as it was called back then) was founded around 1390 by the Palembang ruler Parameswara. His settlement was short-lived however. Towards the end of the 14th century, it came under attack, most probably by the Thai state of Ayutthya.

Temasek came under the authority of the Melaka sultanate, and devolved into an insignificant fishing settlement, basically little more than an overgrown jungle. When Raffles landed here in 1819 he found swamps, jungle and a lone village of some 100 Malay huts and 30 or so Orang Laut sea nomad families.

So yes, it is reasonably fair to suggest Singaporeans of 13th century immigrant background as “Singaporeans”. I doubt that there are many real Singaporeans left though...

Singapore For Singaporeans wrote on 20.09.2007 at 16:03:

Dear Elmer Fud/CDBT,

Contradictory to what you mentioned, Chinese and the Indians had already been settled in Singapore for ages before Raffles colonized Singapore.

Singapore got its name in the 13th century through its ancient hindu founders. Singapore, a Sanskrit word, is prove of that.

It is reasonably fair to suggest Singaporeans of 13th century immigrant background as "Singaporeans".

Lionel Tan wrote on 19.09.2007 at 13:56:

Wednesday last week, just after finishing work at the office of my employer (a large German pharmaceutical company\'s regional office here in Singapore)i, a Singaporean, took the keys to my BMW, put my Siemens mobile phone in my pocket and grabbed my Braun Buffel briefcase to head for the parking lot.
I was in a hurry to pick up my wife, also a Singaporean, from her workplace at the rep office of a German TV Station. Her Audi was at the service station for a thourough cleaning, so she needed a ride.
Unfortunately one of my Singaporean work collegues had parked his Mercedes so close to my BMW that i had to wait for him to arrive.
My MontBlanc watch told me that i was running late.

My wife and I had reservations at the German restaurant Werner\'s Oven that evening. We both just can\'t get enough of their pork knuckles along with a couple of Erdinger beers.
Anyway, my collegue arrived, took off in his Mercedes and I was on my way. I loaded one of my favourite CDs of The Scorpions into the Blaupunkt Audiosystem and cruised to my wife\'s office.

My wife loves me and she knows that i love reading. When she got in my car, she handed me a book called \"Perfume\". Great read by the German writer Patrick Suesskind - i recommend it. And since I love her wearing a Jil Sander fragrance, i had bought some on my last trip by Lufthansa to Frankfurt. I was happy to be able to return a gift on the spot.
At Werner\'s Oven we were, as always, greated cordially by one of Werner\'s daughters, who is married to a local and a proud mother of 3 children by now. She used to play very successfully for the Singapore National Women\'s Handball Team, which impressed my wife and me very much.
Anyway, we had a lovely diner there before making our way home.
At home, my wife stuffed our Miele washing machine with the day\'s laundry and then she prepared an espresso on our Krups espresso machine. Good thing to have after a sumptious meal. I can recommend Melitta espresso which is available at every Coldstorage outlet.
She herself had a glas of chilled German Riesling that is being imported into Singapore by the reputed traditional German trading firm C. Melchers & Co.

The next day I read a posting by Singapore for Singaporeans on your website here that made me think:

Should i get rid of my beloved BMW? and my wife\'s Audi?
Should i avoid my Mercedes-driving collegue?
Should i replace my Braun Buffel briefcase with a no name plastic folder?
Should i resign and look for a job in one of the many large Singaporean pharmaceutical companies instead?
Should i ask my wife to resign?
Should i advise her to swap Jil Sander for a Singaporean fragrance?
Should i discourage her from buying any but Singaporean books?
Should we say good-bye to Werner\'s and stick to chicken rice?
Should i change to Tiger beer only?
Should i replace our Miele with a Samsung, while waiting until someone starts making Singaporean washing machines?
Should i throw out the Krups espresso machine and stick to copi?
Should i destroy our remaining bottles of German Riesling and enjoy New Water instead?

We thought really hard about it and then my wife and i decided: nah, all these German people and products have enriched our lives to an extent we would not want to do without - ever!

So i guess, my wife will be driving me in her Audi to the next Octoberfest here in Singapore - we would be poorer without it.

The earlier comments were absolutely uncalled for and entirely ridiculous. I believe the team does not bear any political interest or standing which compromises with the values of Singapore culture.

Just so you know, Singapore adopts a democratic system. What you are speaking of amounts to nationalism; which is entirely incorrect.

According to www.dictionary.com
<1.Devotion to the interests or culture of one's nation.

Dear Singapore for Singaporeans,

Denying people from ANY country the right to uphold their culture and traditions is a form of rascism. So for now I think we will continue drinking Paulaner and Chanting "German Dragons, German Dragons, Go Go Go" which isn't actually German by the way.

Cheers.

I hope this blog was a joke, because if it wasn't, then the joke is obviously YOU. Value of Singapore? "Multi-racial, multi-cultural society" - get with the programme you puritan.

Singapore For Singaporeans wrote on 13.09.2007 at 14:42:

We are a group of Singaporeans who are concerned with the activities of your organization.

It has been brought to our attention that you(German Dragons Singapore) engage in activites which are a threat to the Singapore culture and the Singaporean way of life.

This organisation is seen as a platform to promote and uphold German culture and trademarks. (actively engaging in the recruitment of Singaporeans, chanting of German slogans in public, organising German traditions etc) This is not welcomed as it deemed as a mean to contradict the Singapore value of culture.

The logo on the left hand-side of your homepage is also deemed insensitive as the word "Singapore" is used in context of the colors of the German flag.

We hope that you would use your organisational means to engage for sporting reasons only and not in the promotion of the German cultural value.

With the continued persecution of non-Germans in Germany, we find this reminder to you most timely and appropriate.

Hey folks,
This is about the Tuesday Fitness Program. Its simply wonderful. It was my first session yesterday. What's good about it?
1) Its in Botanical garden.
2) Its exercising as a group. Each of us kept it going with jokes and encouragement...
3) Exercising in midst of the nature which is so giving... Trust me you need to be there to feel it...
4) Tailor made for the people. Its a combo of heavy and light exercise covering the entire body. (I was very tired from work and after this I was totallllllly freshhh)
5) 1 hour 15 min and with breaks in mid(3 breaks and 5 to 7 min each)
6) Everyone was involved. There was no forcing. If people had some problems then alternatives were suggested.

I loved it and believe me if this is more frequent I'll cancel my Gym membership. Yes, its absolutely free as well What more do I want...

Azhar and Andre conducted the session wonderfully. Just one suggestion... Maybe you guys can state the benefits occassionaly of doing some exercise during the breaks.
Of course another very good thing is there was lots of stretching.. I do not have any body aches...

Just to give you a quick update about our little sponsor afternoon yesterday (Thursday 08-08-2006).

Pam and I (Thanks Pam for taking half day leave) where showing our "new" boats to our sponsors from Germany represented here in Singapore by GPS/SCDA. 25 people came yesterday afternoon to the beer beach out of which 13 came from Germany. We gave them a little training and showed them that our sport is actually harder than it looks After about 1 hour of basic training we had a little race between these two boats. Needles to say that my boat won both races......

Hope to see y'all tonight for the soccer game in Paulaner

Cheers

With these great results we have for the first time two (big) boats in the final tomorrow!! For the small men unfortunately the second place was not enough to reach the final, since only the fastes boat in each of the six heats qualified. Let's paddle for medals tomorrow!

Thank you for being my intrepreters during rowing. It must be pretty difficult for you especially gestures so I take my opportunity to say a big thank you. So if you want to learn signs properly, come to me and I teach you ABC-Z and numbers so that easier to use this during rowing...

Love you all!
Stay pretty! Soon tossing the coin...

What a GREAT weekend in Penang! We had a lot of fun, very good races, where paddeling against some of the world best international teams and even reached the semi-final with two boats!! 10 of us just arrived in Singapore by plane, most of the team is still in Malaysia at the final party, coming back by bus tomorrow. I put the first pictures of the weekend online in the gallery, more coming very soon. A very tired but happy dragon is going to bed now , see you soon!

Today's training is very shiok (very exciting in malay) and looking forward for more training since being MIA from dragon boat for one year due to triathlon... I admit I miss my days in National Team but I am very proud I am in German Team. Pardon me if I am hearing impaired and I could not talk but I gladly can teach you signs if you want. Just approach me and I teach you!

Strive for it for our PENANG RACE SOON!

LOVE YOU ALL!

Back in Germany!!!

It was a very nice Monday evening bbq and I say thanks to all of you. Furthermore, I really appreciate that Matze, Janine, Frank and Ulrich accompanied me to the airport and stayed till the end (4:30am). It means a lot to me.

"Die Konsorten" describe with their song "Lang auf" quite well how I feel now:

"[...]
F?r mich ist gestern noch lang nicht aus.
Ich bin schon viel zu lange auf.
Alles leuchtet und sieht strange aus.
Und die Tage ziehn an mir vor?ber.
Ich springe auf und fahre mit.
Momente kommen, bleiben, fliehen.
Ich sehne nach und l?chle still.
F?hl mich entspannt, doch wie beschleunigt.
Ich bleibe wach so lang ich will [...]"

See you soon in Germany AND Singapore!

Sad story but next time we get another gold medal. I#m sure you all did a good job and the local teams are really strong. Nevermind, as Andre said, next time the medal is ours...

See you soon in S'pore

andre wrote on 26.03.2005 at 12:38:

The second day was more exciting than the first one and with 2:27:22min we were really fast. But as the last mixed expat team we were racing against local teams only. It was close, but the others had a bit more endurance. No final heat for us this time. However, we showed a very good performance and next time, when there will be categories again, the gold medal is ours!!!

andre wrote on 25.03.2005 at 15:34:

I simply forward Annelie's SMS:
"We qualified with 2:34min and a lot of luck. 3 boats crashed and had more that 3 min."

How can 3 boats crash?? They should get a medal for that!
However: HURRAY!!!

andre wrote on 25.03.2005 at 13:46:

McRichie Reservoir really is the most beautiful place in Singapore to arrange a dragonboat race. We met this morning from 8:00am on and it was like a big picnic. Very nice. One also has a very nice view onto the race track itself. Pictures will follow.

Unfortunately 2 persons were missing this morning: Yusoff (stuck at work) and Emanuel (waiting in Kallang?). That meant that we had no coxswain and one paddler was missing. Anyway, we got another coxswain and did the race with 17 paddlers only (max. 18) while Markus was counting instead of Yusoff.

Our heat started a bit delayed at maybe 10:20 or 10:30. We had a wonderful start and we were leading at least half of the track before Nanyang Polytechnic. But, and we're famous for that, in the end the others had more endurance and beated us with 2sec which we cannot believe, because it seemed to be really close. However, with 2:30:30min we reached place three only and thus the men's team is out. Still we are the best expat team leading by 7sec. The Canadians' time is not available so far. They, too, had a very good race. The Aussies on the other hand had quite strong competitors and therefore they were beaten with several boat lengths.

The mixed team should race in about 10min. The mixed team ist our strength and I'm sure we'll be racing again tomorrow.

For my first "training" since 4 or 5 months this was really quite tough

Thor wrote on 25.03.2005 at 20:52:

All the best for the race! Power in the water and if you can not you also can. Go for gold and kick some ass.

Wendy wrote on 13.03.2005 at 1:57:

Just can't wait to get on the boat again ...

I loved being back in Singapore!

Train hard and go for another gold medal,

Wendy

Thank you, thank you, thank you for the fun, the camaraderie and the adrenaline rush!

Due to work and personal commitments, I am no longer able to be a part of the team. The only thing I would not miss is the (almost) putrid Kallang River water. Yikes! For what it's worth, I must say that I had a fantabulastic time!

Keep up the good work, train hard but keep things in perspective. It is not about winning, it's about...er... actually it IS about winning! Paddles up!!!

By golly, the Singapore River Race?!

Hey dragons, it seems an eternity since I left Singapore in May, but I'm mighty proud of you
for winning _the_ race! The team really has come a long way since winning the first gold at the Sava Sprints. I remember every second of that race (but not much of the party afterwards and I feel honoured to have been there. I miss our training sessions (not much worth paddling on here in Munich...) and the BBQ-parties everywhere!

Keep up the good work in 2005!

Cheers from Munich, with a cup of "Gl?hwein"!

Ready, Paddles up, ...
